Zenphoto

Zenphoto is an open-source content management system written in PHP, specialised in publishing and organising photo galleries and multimedia material. Unlike general CMS systems, in which media handling is added with plugins, Zenphoto has album and photo management built into its core.

How Zenphoto works

Zenphoto organises content into albums and sub-albums, automatically generates thumbnails and various photo sizes, and reads image metadata such as EXIF data. Beyond galleries, it also offers blog and simple page features, so a photographer or artist can run a complete site: presenting a portfolio, describing works and publishing news in one system. The appearance is changed through themes, and features are extended with add-ons.

Who Zenphoto is for

Zenphoto is aimed above all at photographers, artists and creators for whom photos are the main content rather than an add-on. It is run on standard hosting with PHP and database support. Because galleries can be heavy, image optimisation matters — serving modern formats such as WebP and sensible thumbnail sizes has a big effect on loading speed. Compared with large, universal CMS systems, Zenphoto is a narrower but well-honed tool in its niche: where the priority is a clear presentation of many photos, its specialised architecture can be more convenient than a general system with gallery plugins bolted on. For a creator whose whole site is built around presenting images, that specialisation is a real advantage.
