TrueView Discovery ads
TrueView Discovery ads (now called In-feed video ads in Google Ads) are a video ad format that does not auto-play; instead it appears as a thumbnail with a description inviting a click. Unlike in-stream formats, the user decides whether to watch the video.
What the Discovery format involves
A Discovery ad looks almost like a regular YouTube result — it combines a thumbnail, a title and a snippet of description, marked with an "Ad" label. It appears in places where the user is actively looking for content:
- in YouTube search results,
- on the YouTube home feed,
- next to and below videos as suggested video.
Billing uses the CPV model, but in a specific sense: the charge is triggered only when someone clicks the thumbnail and starts the video. That is why thumbnail and title quality are critical — they translate directly into CTR.
Discovery in practice
The format shines when the ad should reach people with genuine interest in a topic — because they are the ones clicking the thumbnail. Discovery is excellent for promoting how-tos, reviews, product demos and content that answers specific queries. Campaigns are configured in Google Ads by choosing keywords, topics and audiences. Compared with in-stream, Discovery attracts more engaged viewers, which often means higher-quality traffic and less wasted budget.
What to watch with Discovery
Since a Discovery ad competes for attention with YouTube's organic results, the elements visible before the click matter most: the thumbnail, the title and the first line of description. The thumbnail should be legible even on a small screen and consistent with the video, while the title should clearly communicate the benefit to the viewer. It is worth testing variants of these elements and comparing their CTR, because it decides whether the campaign generates any views at all. As the charge only lands after a click, the format does not burn budget on stray impressions, but it does demand polished creative that earns a deliberate choice.
