CTR (click-through rate)
CTR (click-through rate) is the percentage of people who clicked a link, ad, or search result out of everyone who saw it. The formula is straightforward: clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. A search snippet displayed 1,000 times that earns 80 clicks has a CTR of 8%. Because it captures the exact moment a viewer decides your message is worth their attention, CTR is one of the most widely used metrics in digital marketing.
How click-through rate works
CTR reflects how compelling a message is at its decision point. In organic search, the main levers are the page title, the meta description, the ranking position on the SERP, and enhancements such as rich results with star ratings. In paid campaigns, headline relevance and creative quality dominate. Ad platforms also feed CTR back into their auction systems: in Google Ads, expected click-through rate is a core component of Quality Score, so ads that get clicked more often win better placements at lower cost per click. In other words, CTR is both a diagnostic metric and a pricing signal.
Practical applications
Marketers rely on click-through rate across channels:
- SEO — spotting pages in Google Search Console that rank well but underperform on clicks, then rewriting titles and descriptions;
- PPC — A/B testing headlines and creatives to raise relevance and cut acquisition costs;
- email marketing — measuring how many recipients clicked a link, alongside open rate;
- social media — evaluating which creatives and calls to action drive traffic.
Benchmarks vary enormously: a branded search ad may exceed 20% CTR, while display banners often sit below 0.5%, so comparisons only make sense within the same channel and intent level. It is also worth remembering that CTR measures attraction, not outcome — a sensational headline can inflate clicks while attracting visitors who never convert. Mature teams therefore read CTR together with conversion rate, treating it as the first stage of a funnel rather than a goal in itself.

How is CTR calculated?
Divide the number of clicks by the number of impressions and multiply by 100. An ad shown 5,000 times that receives 100 clicks has a CTR of 2%. Most analytics and ad platforms compute it automatically per keyword, ad, or page.
