TrueView In-Stream ads

TrueView In-Stream ads are the skippable variant of video advertising served in the player — before, during or after content on YouTube and Google's video partner network. The name TrueView refers to how they are billed: the advertiser pays only for "true views," not for every impression. This is the most popular in-stream format.

What TrueView In-Stream involves

The spot begins in the player, and after 5 seconds a "Skip" button appears. The viewer can watch the whole thing or skip — and that choice drives campaign cost. A CPV charge is triggered when:

  • the viewer watches at least 30 seconds of the ad,
  • watches the entire spot if it is shorter than 30 seconds,
  • or clicks an element of the ad — a link, button or banner — before that.

Because skipping before the threshold costs nothing, the opening seconds determine the effectiveness of the whole campaign and the real cost of reach.

TrueView In-Stream in practice

The format is used to build awareness and deliver a richer message while keeping costs in check — you mainly pay for interested viewers. Campaigns are built in Google Ads by setting audiences, budget and a CPV bid. It pairs well with short brand-reminder bumpers and with remarketing aimed at people who watched the spot to the end.

TrueView In-Stream versus other formats

Within the TrueView family it helps to distinguish two approaches. In-Stream runs inside the player, interrupting the video being watched, and charges per view; Discovery appears as a thumbnail in results and suggestions, with a charge only after a click. The first excels at building reach and awareness, the second at reaching people actively looking for content. In practice both formats are often run in parallel within one video strategy, complemented by non-skippable bumpers to cement the brand. The choice depends on the campaign goal, the budget and whether you care more about reach or about the quality of the viewer's attention.

Najczęstsze pytania

After how many seconds are you charged for TrueView In-Stream?

You are charged when a viewer watches at least 30 seconds of the ad, the whole spot if it is shorter, or interacts with it earlier (clicks a link or button). If they skip before that threshold, the impression is free.
