Title tag

The title tag (the <title> element) is an HTML tag that defines a page's title. Search engines display it as the clickable blue headline of a search result, and browsers show it on the tab and in bookmarks. The title tag is considered one of the most important on-page SEO elements — it directly influences both how the search engine understands the page's topic and the user's decision to click.

How the title tag works

The title is written between the <title> tags in the <head> section. It should be unique for each page, concise (usually 50–60 characters) and contain the main keyword, ideally near the start. Google treats the title's content as a strong topical signal, so its relevance carries ranking weight. Note that the search engine may rewrite the title in its own snippet if it decides another version fits the query better — a well-written, accurate title reduces the risk of such a swap.

Practical application

An effective title tag combines the keyword with an incentive to click and often ends with the brand name after a separator, for example: "Keyword — benefit | Brand". For stores, titles with the product name, category and a selling point work well. Stuffing many keywords into a title (keyword stuffing) hurts both readability and effectiveness.

In CMS platforms like WordPress, titles are usually set through SEO plugins that let you build title templates for whole content types. Together with the meta description, the title tag forms the snippet in the SERP and largely determines the click-through rate. Refining titles is one of the most fundamental and cost-effective SEO tasks.

What is the optimal length for a title tag?

Around 50–60 characters is most often recommended. Google displays the title up to a limited pixel width (about 580 pixels) and truncates longer text with an ellipsis. Place the most important keyword at the start and the brand name at the end, so the message stays readable even when shortened.

How is the title tag different from an H1 heading?

The title tag lives in the head section and is shown in search results and on the browser tab, but not on the page itself. The H1 heading is the main visible title of the content on the page. They can be similar but need not be identical — the title is often optimized for clicks in the SERP, while the H1 is optimized for on-page readability.
