SERP

A SERP (Search Engine Results Page) is the page a search engine such as Google shows a user in response to a query. Although intuitively it evokes a list of ten blue links, the modern SERP is far more complex — it combines results of different types, rich elements and blocks that answer the question directly, and its appearance depends on the intent behind the query.

How a SERP works

A typical results page is made up of several kinds of element:

  • Organic results — free positions determined by the algorithm on the basis of relevance and quality; earning them is the goal of SEO;
  • Paid results — ads labelled "Sponsored", usually above and below the organic results;
  • Featured snippet — a highlighted fragment that answers the question directly, shown in the so-called position zero;
  • People Also Ask — an expandable list of questions related to the query;
  • Additional elements — knowledge graphs, a map with locations, images, videos, product carousels or rich results with ratings and prices.

The composition and order of these blocks depend on the query's intent: a shopping phrase shows product cards and ads, while an informational question shows a snippet and a related-questions section.

Practical application

Understanding the structure of a SERP is the starting point of any visibility strategy. A specialist analyses which elements dominate for the target phrases and adapts the content to capture not only a high organic position but also the featured snippet or a slot in the questions section. The growing share of rich elements and answers generated directly on the results page means that the competition today is not just for the first position but for the user's very attention within an increasingly dense, multi-layered SERP.

How do organic and paid results differ in a SERP?

Organic results are free positions determined by the algorithm based on a page's relevance and quality. Paid results are ads labelled "Sponsored", whose position depends on the bid and ad quality. Organic positions are built through SEO, paid ones through campaigns such as Google Ads.
