SEO backlink network

An SEO backlink network (often called a link network or, in Polish, zaplecze SEO) is a set of websites created or controlled by an SEO practitioner in order to place links pointing to a target site. The aim is to artificially increase the number and strength of inbound links, which in the classic search model influence how a site's authority and ranking are assessed.

How a backlink network works

The idea rests on the fact that backlinks are a ranking signal: the more valuable sites link to a page, the higher it may rank. A backlink network tries to short-circuit this mechanism by supplying links from sites the practitioner controls — from forgotten domains to whole networks built solely for the purpose of linking. Such link building is often done at scale and in an unnatural way.

Risk and the alternative

An SEO backlink network is a borderline black hat technique carrying significant risk. For years Google has developed algorithms that detect artificial linking schemes, and their recognition results in penalties — from removing the influence of such links to a drop in the ranking of the whole site. The effect can therefore be the opposite of what was intended: a short-lived rise ends in a lasting loss of visibility and worsened metrics, including domain assessment (domain rating). A safer and more durable strategy is to earn links naturally through valuable content and genuine recommendations. In well-run SEO, the quality and context of links count far more than their number, which is why investing in a site's real value usually pays off more than building a risky link network.
