Domain Rating

Domain Rating (DR) is a metric from Ahrefs that measures the strength of a website's entire backlink profile on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. It answers a single question: compared with every other site in the Ahrefs index, how powerful are the links pointing at this domain? DR is not used by Google, but because it distills raw link equity into one number, it has become an industry-standard shorthand for domain strength.

How Domain Rating is calculated

Ahrefs starts by counting the unique referring domains that link to the target site with at least one followed link. Each referring domain contributes according to its own DR — a link from a DR 85 site carries far more weight than one from a DR 12 blog. Crucially, that contribution is split across all unique domains the referring site links out to, so a link from a page with thousands of outbound links passes only a sliver of equity per backlink. The final scores are plotted on a logarithmic curve: climbing from DR 60 to 70 requires exponentially more link equity than moving from 20 to 30. DR should not be confused with URL Rating (UR), which scores an individual page rather than the whole domain.

Practical applications

DR is most useful as a fast qualifier in link building: when you have a list of two hundred outreach prospects, sorting by DR immediately surfaces the sites most likely to pass meaningful authority. Typical use cases include:

  • benchmarking your domain against competitors targeting the same keywords,
  • tracking whether digital-PR and content campaigns actually strengthen your link profile quarter over quarter,
  • valuing websites and expired domains before a purchase.

Treat DR as a starting point, not a verdict. It says nothing about topical relevance, content quality or real traffic, and private blog networks can inflate it artificially. Cross-check promising domains with organic-traffic estimates and a manual review, and remember that a technically healthy, consistently available website is what earns the natural links behind a durable DR.

What is a good Domain Rating?

There is no universal threshold — DR is relative. A DR of 30 may dominate a local niche while barely registering in finance or tech. Compare your score against the domains ranking for your target keywords, and focus on the trend over time rather than the raw number.
