Backlink

A backlink (inbound link) is a hyperlink placed on one website that points to another. From the destination site's perspective it is a link coming in from outside — a kind of vote cast by another domain. In SEO, backlinks are among the most important ranking factors, because search engines treat them as recommendations that confirm a page's value and credibility.

How backlinks work

Search engines assumed from the start that if many independent sites link to a given page, it probably contains valuable content. A backlink passes some of the source page's authority to the target — a mechanism known as link juice. Not all links carry equal weight, however. A backlink's strength depends on the authority and topical relevance of the linking page, the anchor text, its placement in the content, and whether it is a dofollow link or carries the nofollow attribute. The combined power and quality of inbound links influence a site's domain authority.

Practical application

Deliberately earning valuable backlinks is the essence of link building. Quality, not quantity, is key: a handful of links from respected, topically related sites is worth more than hundreds of links from random, low-quality pages, which can even do harm. A healthy link profile grows naturally, contains varied anchors and a mix of dofollow and nofollow links. Regular audits of the backlink profile, for example in tools such as Ahrefs, help catch toxic links and keep a site credible in the eyes of the search engine.

The view of backlinks has shifted as search engines matured. Once the sheer number of links mattered most; today algorithms are far better at judging their quality, context and naturalness. Artificial, mass-acquired links have not only stopped working but can genuinely harm a site's visibility. That is why the modern approach favours valuable content that naturally attracts links, along with building relationships within an industry. A durable rise in domain authority is the result of consistent work, not one-off, aggressive link campaigns.

Najczęstsze pytania

Is every backlink good for SEO?

No. Valuable links come from topically related, credible sites with a good reputation. Links from spammy sites, link farms or low-quality pages can hurt and trigger algorithmic filters. What matters is the quality and naturalness of the link profile, not the sheer number of backlinks.

How does a dofollow backlink differ from a nofollow one?

A dofollow backlink passes some ranking power to the target page and is read as a vote of confidence. A backlink with the nofollow attribute signals to the search engine not to pass authority through it. A natural profile contains both types, which makes it more credible to the algorithm.
