Keyword stuffing

Keyword stuffing is one of the oldest black hat SEO techniques, consisting of unnaturally, excessively saturating a page with phrases in the hope of artificially lifting its rankings. Instead of writing for the reader, the author "stuffs" the text, meta tags and attributes with the same phrase, hoping to fool the algorithm. Google has detected this practice effectively for years and treats it as spam.

What keyword stuffing looks like

Phrase stuffing takes various, increasingly disguised forms:

• repeating the phrase in successive sentences or paragraphs beyond all reason, at the expense of meaning and flow;
• keyword lists pasted into the footer or the bottom of the page with no editorial value;
• hidden text — phrases in the background colour, at zero size or pushed off-screen (so-called tiny text);
• overloaded meta tags and image alt attributes filled with repetitions of the phrase.

The common denominator is prioritising the crawler over the human — the text becomes unreadable, and a high keyword density is a clear signal of manipulation.

Practical application

In practice, keyword stuffing now backfires. Google has algorithms that understand context and intent, so mechanically saturating a page with a phrase not only fails to help but triggers algorithmic filters or manual penalties. The results are drops in ranking, lost traffic and, in extreme cases, deindexing of the page.

Instead of phrase stuffing, the modern, safe approach is used: natural use of the keyword in key places, enriching the content with synonyms and related concepts, and comprehensive coverage of the topic. Text written primarily for the user naturally meets the search engine's requirements, with no risk of penalties.
