Keyword density

Keyword density is a metric that indicates what percentage of all the words on a page a given phrase accounts for. You calculate it by dividing the number of occurrences of a keyword by the total word count and multiplying by 100. It was one of the most discussed parameters of early SEO, but its importance today is heavily overstated.

What keyword density means

For example, if a phrase appears 6 times in a 600-word text, its density is 1%. In the early days of search engines, when algorithms were primitive, higher density really did lift rankings — and that quickly led to abuse. Modern Google works very differently:

  • it understands synonyms and variants of a phrase thanks to natural-language processing, so you don't need to repeat the exact same string;
  • it judges the topical relevance of the whole document, not the count of one word;
  • it factors in context and intent rather than mechanical phrase saturation.

As a result, there is no "ideal" keyword density to set as a goal. Artificially chasing a specific percentage produces unnatural, hard-to-read text.

Practical application

In practice, keyword density is now treated more as a warning sign than an optimisation target. A very high value usually signals keyword stuffing — cramming in a phrase, which hurts readability and may be judged a black hat SEO technique. Its absence, in turn, suggests the topic hasn't been covered thoroughly enough.

Rather than counting percentages, it's better to focus on natural, exhaustive coverage of the subject, using the phrase in key places (title, headings, first paragraph) and enriching the content with related concepts. This approach, a foundation of on-page optimisation, naturally yields healthy phrase density and better matches what the user is looking for.

What is the optimal keyword density?

There's no magic threshold — Google doesn't count phrases mechanically. Instead of targeting a specific percentage, write naturally and cover the topic thoroughly. If you want a rough reference, values around 0.5–2% usually emerge on their own, without forced repetition.
