Black hat SEO is the collective name for ranking techniques that violate search engine guidelines (such as Google Search Essentials) in order to boost a site's positions quickly and artificially. It is the opposite of ethical white hat SEO: rather than building genuine value for users, it tries to game the algorithm — and the line between the two is drawn by the search engines' published policies.

How black hat SEO works

The most common practices include:

• keyword stuffing — cramming target phrases unnaturally into content and metadata,
• cloaking — serving crawlers different content than human visitors see,

In practice, black hat tactics survive mainly in churn-and-burn projects that treat domains as disposable. For any business website the risk profile is unacceptable: detection ends in an algorithmic filter or a manual action visible in Google Search Console, a collapse in visibility, and in extreme cases removal from the index altogether. Recovery means removing the violations, disavowing toxic links and filing a reconsideration request — a process measured in months, not days. When hiring an SEO contractor, ask specifically how links and content are acquired; suspiciously fast results almost always mean techniques the domain owner will eventually pay for.
