Google Merchant Center
Google Merchant Center is Google's free platform for online stores, where merchants upload and manage data about their products. The information gathered there powers Shopping ads in Google Ads as well as the free product listings shown in Search and the Shopping tab.
How Google Merchant Center works
At the heart of the platform is the product feed — a structured dataset describing the store's entire catalogue. For each product you provide, among other things:
- Title and description — a name and characteristics matching what customers actually type;
- Price and availability — current values that must match those on the site;
- Images — high-quality product photos;
- Identifiers — GTIN, MPN and brand, which help match the product accurately.
The feed can be uploaded manually, fetched on a schedule, or synced through an integration with a store platform. Merchant Center validates the data against Google's guidelines and flags any errors you need to fix before products can be shown.
Practical application
Merchant Center is an essential part of running Shopping campaigns in e-commerce. Once the account is linked to Google Ads, feed data automatically powers Shopping ads that show the image, price and store name directly in search results — a format that is exceptionally effective for sales.
Popular store platforms such as WooCommerce, PrestaShop and Shoper offer plugins and integrations that automatically generate and update the product feed. The key to success is keeping the data in perfect sync with the store — mismatches in price or availability lead to disapproved products or a suspended account.

What is a product feed in Merchant Center?
A product feed is a structured file or store connection that contains data for all products: title, price, availability, images, GTIN identifiers and descriptions. Merchant Center pulls this data and makes it available to Shopping ads and free listings. It must always be up to date.
