Product Listing Ads (PLA)
Product Listing Ads (PLA), or shopping ads, are a Google ad format that displays a product image, its price, and the product and store name, leading directly to the product page. Unlike classic text ads, PLAs show the visual and the price before the click, which makes them especially effective in e-commerce.
How Product Listing Ads work
PLAs are not based on manually set keywords but on the product data supplied by the merchant. Google matches ads to queries using the contents of the product feed. The key elements are:
- Product feed — a list of products with prices, images and availability uploaded to Google Merchant Center.
- Campaign link — a Merchant Center account connected to Google Ads.
- Billing — the CPC model, paying per click through to the store.
- Visual presentation — image, price and title shown directly in the results.
PLA in practice
Product Listing Ads are a cornerstone of online store promotion:
- Selling products — showing the offer to people with high purchase intent.
- Price comparison — users see the price upfront and choose which offers to click.
- Optimising for ROAS — ads measured on return on ad spend via the ROAS metric.
The quality of the product feed translates directly into results — good images, precise titles and up-to-date prices increase the relevance of impressions and lower the cost of acquiring a customer.
PLA and automated campaigns
Today shopping ads are rarely run in isolation — increasingly they are part of smart campaigns that automatically choose placements across Search, the Display Network, YouTube and Gmail. These systems optimise bids in real time toward a set goal, such as maximising conversion value. For the merchant this shifts the focus away from manual keyword management toward the quality of product data, accurate conversion tracking and clear business goals. The foundation, however, always remains a complete, up-to-date and well-optimised product feed, without which even the best algorithm will not achieve good results.

Where do Product Listing Ads get their product data?
The data comes from a product feed uploaded to Google Merchant Center. It contains names, prices, availability, images and product identifiers. Google matches this information to user queries and displays relevant shopping ads.
