Dwell Time

Dwell time is the amount of time a user spends on a page after clicking it in the search results (SERP), before returning to the results list. In practice it is the interval between a click on a result and the user reappearing on the search page. A long dwell time suggests the content answered the visitor's need, while a quick return — known as pogo-sticking — may indicate that the page disappointed.

What dwell time involves

Dwell time is often confused with related metrics, so it helps to distinguish:

  • dwell time — the time between a SERP click and a return to the results;
  • time on page — the visit duration measured in an analytics tool;
  • bounce rate — the share of sessions with no further interaction.

The metric reflects how well content and its presentation satisfy search intent. It is shaped by substantive quality, readability, load speed and whether the user finds the answer they came for right away.

Practical applications

Although dwell time is not an official ranking factor, SEO specialists treat it as an indirect quality signal and optimise to extend it. Engaging introductions, a clear heading structure, multimedia elements, internal links to related content, and a fast server that removes frustrating delays all help. That said, avoid inflating the time artificially — padded introductions and burying the answer at the end of an article irritate more than they engage. The aim is different: make it instantly clear the user has landed in the right place, then give them a reason to keep reading. Combined with a high CTR, a long dwell time paints a picture of a page that not only attracts clicks but genuinely meets user needs — the foundation of effective content marketing and durable search visibility.

How does dwell time differ from bounce rate?

Dwell time is the specific time spent on a page from the search results before returning to the SERP. Bounce rate is the share of sessions that end without interaction, as measured by analytics tools. A short dwell time often goes hand in hand with a high bounce rate.
