Disavow Tool
The Disavow Tool is a feature of Google Search Console that allows a site owner to renounce specific inbound links — effectively asking Google to ignore chosen backlinks when evaluating the site. Google introduced it in 2012 alongside the Penguin algorithm, when manipulative link profiles could earn a ranking penalty and webmasters needed a way to distance themselves from links they could not remove.
How the Disavow Tool works
You upload a plain-text file (UTF-8, .txt) in which each line names either a single URL or an entire domain:
- domain:spammy-site.example — disavows every link from that domain; the recommended form, since spam sites usually link from many pages,
- https://site.example/post-with-link — disavows one specific page,
- lines starting with # are comments, useful for documenting why entries were added.
The file is a strong hint rather than an instant command: Google applies it gradually as its crawler revisits the linking pages, so effects typically surface over several weeks. Each new upload completely replaces the previous file for that property, so always edit the full list rather than submitting only new entries.
Using the tool in practice
Google is explicit that most sites should never touch the Disavow Tool — its systems already discount ordinary link spam automatically. Legitimate scenarios are narrow:
- Manual action for unnatural links — disavowing is part of the cleanup evidence you present with a reconsideration request.
- Inherited toxic profiles — an acquired domain carrying years of paid links or directory spam that webmasters refuse to remove.
- Severe link-based attacks — extreme cases of negative SEO where the volume of hostile links genuinely worries you.
Best practice: attempt removal at the source first and keep records of outreach, cross-check suspect links in several data sources before disavowing, and prefer domain-level entries. Disavowing carelessly can hurt — cutting off links that actually pass authority lowers rankings, and recovering from an over-aggressive file takes weeks.

When should I actually use the Disavow Tool?
Google recommends it only in two situations: your site has a manual action for unnatural links, or you know such an action is likely because of past paid or spammy link building you cannot remove at the source. Routine cleanup of random spam links is unnecessary — algorithms already ignore them.
