Zero-click searches

Zero-click searches are queries for which the user obtains an answer directly on the search results page, without clicking any of the links and going to a site. The answer is provided by elements such as featured snippets, knowledge panels, definitions, currency rates, opening hours or calculation results shown right in Google.

Where zero-click searches come from

Search engines increasingly try to satisfy the user's intent immediately by presenting a ready answer at the top of the results. For simple, factual queries — a date, a conversion, a short definition — the user has no reason to visit a site, because they got what they were looking for. The content shown in these elements usually comes from indexed pages, so paradoxically it is an indexed site that supplies the answer the user then settles for.

Impact on SEO and strategy

For site owners, zero-click searches mean that some of what was once valuable traffic no longer reaches the site. It is not purely a loss, though: appearing in featured snippets builds brand recognition and strengthens perceived authority, even without a click. Effective SEO takes this phenomenon into account, optimising content for position zero, ensuring apt title tags that encourage clicks where a visit makes sense, and focusing on more complex queries that cannot be closed with a single line of answer. A complement remains building domain authority, among other things through valuable link building, so that it is precisely your content that becomes the source of the answer shown to users.

Are zero-click searches bad for sites?

They reduce traffic, because the user gets part of the answer without clicking. But they can be used: appearing in featured snippets builds brand visibility and authority, and more complex topics still drive visits to the site.
