SGE

SGE (Search Generative Experience) is Google's experimental search mode in which artificial intelligence generates direct, summarised answers to queries — rather than showing only the classic list of links. The feature debuted in the Search Labs program and became the foundation of today's AI Overviews, the production version of generative summaries in search results.

How SGE works

SGE blends traditional search with a large language model. Instead of scanning results themselves, the user receives a generated answer paragraph at the top of the page, accompanied by links to sources:

  • Generative summary — a concise, synthesised answer built from multiple pages.
  • Source cards — links to the content the model based its answer on.
  • Conversational follow-up — the ability to refine the query in a conversational mode.

For some queries, especially informational ones, the answer appears without the need to visit any page — increasing the share of zero-click searches.

SGE in practice

For site owners and SEO specialists, SGE shifts the optimisation goal: what matters is not just a high ranking but the chance to be a source cited in an AI summary. In practice it pays to create content that precisely answers search intent, is well structured, backed by structured data, and trustworthy in sensitive (YMYL) areas. Although SGE evolved into AI Overviews, the acronym still circulates in the industry as shorthand for the generative direction of search.

Najczęstsze pytania

How does SGE differ from AI Overviews?

SGE was the original, experimental name for Google's generative search during its Search Labs testing phase. After a production rollout the feature was renamed and developed as AI Overviews — technically a continuation of the same idea.

How does SGE affect organic traffic?

Generative summaries answer part of the queries directly on the results page, increasing the share of zero-click searches. This can lower click-through for purely informational content, raising the importance of unique value and being cited as an AI source.
