Rich Results
Rich results (formerly rich snippets) are enhanced Google search listings that, beyond the standard title, URL and description, display extra, visually highlighted elements. Instead of a plain link, the user might see star ratings for a product, its price and availability, a list of questions and answers, a recipe photo with prep time, or breadcrumb navigation. These listings catch the eye and typically lift the click-through rate.
How rich results work
Rich results are built on structured data — an additional, user-invisible description of a page's content in a format search engines understand. The most common approach uses the Schema.org vocabulary written as JSON-LD. The markup tells Google that a given part of the page is, for example, a product (with price and rating), an article, an event, a recipe, a local business or an FAQ section.
Once Googlebot reads and understands the markup, it may — but is not obliged to — generate an enhanced result from it. The most popular types include:
- ratings and reviews — stars and review counts,
- products — price, availability, reviews,
- FAQ and HowTo — expandable questions or step-by-step instructions,
- breadcrumbs — a navigation path instead of a raw URL.
Rich results in practice
Enhanced results are an important part of an SEO strategy because they raise visibility and clicks in the SERPs without needing a higher position. Online stores benefit from stars and prices, food blogs from recipe cards, and service sites from local-business data. Implementation starts with adding valid structured data, then verifying it in the Rich Results Test and the Search Console report. Rich results are distinct from featured snippets, which Google generates automatically from page content without any markup.

Does adding structured data guarantee rich results?
No. Valid structured data is necessary but not sufficient — Google decides on its own whether and when to display an enhanced result. The markup improves your chances but does not guarantee them.
How do I check whether a page qualifies for rich results?
Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Enhancements report in Google Search Console. They show which rich-result types were detected and which markup errors need fixing.
