SERM

SERM (Search Engine Reputation Management) is the set of activities aimed at shaping the image of a brand, company or person as presented in search results. The starting point is a simple observation: when someone checks a company before buying or partnering, they type its name into Google — and the first page of results becomes its calling card. SERM makes sure that calling card is favourable.

How SERM works

Reputation management in search works in two directions. The first is strengthening positive and neutral content — publishing and optimizing material intended to occupy top positions for brand phrases: the company's own site, social media profiles, listings, positive articles, reviews and case studies. The second is suppressing unfavourable content — negative reviews, posts or articles — by pushing it onto later pages of the SERP, which only a tiny fraction of users ever reach.

An important element is constant monitoring of what appears in the results for brand queries, and responding to crises before negative content gains visibility. SERM uses the same tools as SEO — content optimization, link building and content marketing — but points them at identity-related phrases rather than the offer.

Practical application

SERM is used by image-conscious companies, public figures, candidates in recruitment, and brands recovering from a media crisis. Typical activities include building and ranking profiles on review sites, actively managing customer reviews, maintaining an accurate Google knowledge panel, and creating valuable expert content under a name or brand. The goal is not to hide the truth but to ensure that a fair, up-to-date picture of the company dominates the first results — because those results shape a potential customer's first impression and trust within seconds.

How does SERM differ from SEO?

SEO aims for high positions on phrases related to your offer and to acquire traffic. SERM focuses on brand phrases — a brand name or a person's name — and on the image the results build for those queries. SEO attracts customers, SERM protects and shapes reputation.
