Ranking factors

Ranking factors are the signals a search engine's algorithm evaluates when deciding which pages appear first for a given query. Google is believed to weigh hundreds of them — from how well a page answers the searcher's question, through the authority of the domain, to how fast and usable the page is on a phone. No official list exists; what the industry knows comes from official documentation, patents, leaks, and large-scale correlation studies.

How ranking factors work

Before ranking happens at all, a page must be crawled and indexed. Once eligible, it competes on several broad signal groups:

  • content relevance and quality — matching search intent, topical depth, freshness, originality, and trust signals often summarized as E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness);
  • authority — the quality and topical relevance of backlinks pointing to the page and domain, which still function as editorial votes;
  • technical health and page experience — crawlability, HTTPS, mobile-friendliness, and Core Web Vitals performance metrics;
  • query context — the searcher's location, language, and device, which personalize the final result set.

The weights are dynamic: core updates re-balance them several times a year, which is why positions fluctuate even when a site does not change.

Practical applications

SEO teams use the ranking-factor model to structure their work into on-page optimization (content, headings, internal links, structured data), off-page efforts (earning links and mentions), and technical SEO (speed, indexing, rendering). In practice, the highest returns come from fundamentals: content that genuinely satisfies the query, a technically sound site on reliable infrastructure, and authority built steadily over time. Chasing individual “secret” factors rarely pays off — every major algorithm update reinforces the same direction, rewarding sites that solve the user's problem better than the competition.

Which ranking factors matter most?

Google has repeatedly pointed to content quality and relevance, links from authoritative sites, and overall page experience as the heaviest signal groups. Exact weights are secret and shift with every algorithm update, so durable SEO focuses on these fundamentals rather than isolated tricks.
