Netiquette

Netiquette (a blend of net and etiquette) is the set of agreed-upon rules for polite and effective communication on the internet. It covers behavior in email, forums, comments, chats and social media. Although it is not law, in practice it forms the foundation of a good online reputation and of smooth cooperation within any online community.

What netiquette involves

At the heart of netiquette lies a simple principle: on the other side of the screen is a human being who deserves the same respect as in a face-to-face conversation. That principle yields concrete rules:

  • Do not write entirely in CAPITAL LETTERS — online this reads as shouting.
  • Avoid spam, flooding and excessive quoting in email replies.
  • Stay on topic and do not derail a discussion from its point.
  • Check your message for errors and clarity before sending.
  • Respect the privacy and copyright of other users.

A distinct area is email netiquette: a clear subject line, concise content, timely replies, and not exposing large groups of recipients in the visible "To" field instead of BCC.

Practical application

For businesses, netiquette carries a commercial dimension. In email marketing, following the rules — sending only to people who have opted in, offering an easy unsubscribe, and avoiding intrusive frequency — directly affects deliverability. Recipients who mark messages as spam damage the sender's reputation and make it harder to reach the inboxes of other customers.

In social media and customer service, netiquette translates into a culture of replying to comments, moderating user-generated content (UGC) and responding to criticism without escalation. A brand that communicates politely and to the point builds trust far more effectively than one that ignores basic online courtesy.

How does netiquette differ from a site's terms of service?

Terms of service are a formal, legally binding document imposed by a site's owner, and breaking them can lead to account suspension. Netiquette is a set of customary, unwritten norms of good manners online. It has no legal force, but observing it builds reputation and eases collaboration within online communities.
