Email marketing

Email marketing is a form of direct marketing that sends electronic messages to a group of recipients who have agreed to be contacted. Its goal is to build a lasting relationship with customers, share offers, educate the audience and prompt a purchase or other action. Despite the rise of social media it remains one of the most cost-effective channels, because it reaches the inbox directly and gives you full control over both the message and your own contact list.

How email marketing works

The foundation is a permission-based mailing list built with the recipients' consent — usually via double opt-in, where the subscriber confirms the sign-up by clicking a link in a verification message. Addresses are collected through sign-up forms, often supported by a lead magnet: a free resource offered in exchange for an email. Effective communication rests on several pillars:

  • Segmentation — dividing the list by interests, purchase history or funnel stage so content stays relevant.
  • Personalization — tailoring the subject line and body to the individual recipient.
  • Automation — sequences delivered by an autoresponder in response to user behaviour (welcome series, abandoned cart).
  • Deliverability — protecting deliverability through sender reputation and SPF, DKIM and DMARC authentication.

Email marketing in practice

Common campaign types include newsletters, promotional offers, transactional messages (order confirmations, invoices) and automated onboarding sequences. Performance is tracked through metrics such as open rate, click-through rate, conversion rate and unsubscribe rate. Running these campaigns requires solid infrastructure: an email marketing platform plus a mail server with correctly configured DNS records, which ultimately decides whether your messages reach recipients at all.

How is email marketing different from spam?

The key difference is consent. Email marketing reaches people who deliberately opted in and can unsubscribe at any time. Spam is unsolicited bulk mail sent without permission, often with a hidden sender. Spam is unlawful and damages your domain's sending reputation.

What affects email deliverability?

Above all the reputation of the sending domain and IP, correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, and list quality. Regularly pruning dead addresses, avoiding spam-trigger wording and keeping engagement high all raise the odds your message lands in the inbox rather than the spam folder.
