Exact match anchor text

Exact match anchor text is the visible text of a link whose wording matches exactly the target keyword the linked page is being optimised for. If a site wants to rank for the phrase "managed WordPress hosting" and a link pointing to it uses that exact wording as its anchor, that is exact match anchor text. It is one of the strongest topical signals in link building — and at the same time the most prone to abuse.

How exact match anchor text works

Anchor text tells the search engine what the destination page is about. An exact match anchor sends the strongest topical message, but that is precisely why it is risky — on the natural web, links rarely carry the exact same optimised phrase. Anchor types form a spectrum:

  • Exact match — precisely the keyword, e.g. "cheap VPS servers".
  • Partial match — the phrase with extra words, e.g. "check out these cheap VPS servers here".
  • Branded — the brand or domain name.
  • Generic — "click here", "read more", or the raw URL.

After Google's Penguin update, an unnaturally high share of exact anchors became a clear manipulation signal that can lead to lost rankings or a filter.

Exact match anchor text in practice

In a safe link building strategy, exact anchors make up only a small percentage of the overall link profile, with branded, generic and partial match anchors dominating. This varied, natural distribution builds credibility in the eyes of the algorithms. When choosing anchors, think about the value to the reader and the context of the link, not just cramming in a keyword.

Is exact match anchor text harmful for SEO?

Not on its own, but overuse is. Natural links rarely carry the exact same commercial phrase in the anchor. Too high a share of exact match in a link profile looks like manipulation and can trigger a Google algorithmic filter, which is why it is used sparingly alongside other anchor types.
