An AI detector is a tool that tries to estimate whether a given text was written by a human or generated by an artificial intelligence model such as a large language model. The result is usually given as a probability or a percentage of content deemed machine-generated.
How an AI detector works
Detectors analyze the statistical features of text using natural language processing methods. They examine, among other things, how predictable the next words are (perplexity) and how much sentence length and structure vary (burstiness). Text produced by language models tends to be more uniform and predictable than text written by a human, which the detector tries to catch. Some tools use separate models trained on examples of human and machine text to classify the input.
An important limitation applies, though: detectors return a probabilistic rather than a certain result. False alarms happen (human text flagged as AI), as do misses, especially when generated content has been edited by a person.
AI detectors in practice
AI detectors are used in education to spot AI-written assignments, in editorial teams to verify commissioned texts, and in SEO and content marketing for quality control. In the context of search ranking, the value of a text to the user matters more than its origin — search engines assess reliability and uniqueness, not whether AI helped. Detectors also help spot mass-produced, low-quality pages and fight duplicate content. Because of the risk of false accusations, a detector's result should not be treated as final proof; it is wiser to combine its signals with a human judgment of a text's substance and value.
