SWOT analysis
SWOT is a popular strategic analysis method that organizes the factors affecting a company, product or project into four areas: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The name is an acronym of these four words. A SWOT analysis provides an orderly picture of a situation and serves as a starting point for building a business and marketing strategy.
What SWOT analysis is
The analysis is usually presented as a matrix divided into four fields. The key distinction is between internal factors, which the organization can influence, and external ones, which arise from the market environment:
- Strengths — internal advantages, e.g. a recognizable brand, an experienced team, a technological edge;
- Weaknesses — internal limitations, e.g. a narrow offer, poor search visibility, a limited budget;
- Opportunities — external possibilities, e.g. rising demand, new sales channels, changes in customer behavior;
- Threats — external risks, e.g. strong competition, legal changes, economic fluctuations.
The value of the analysis depends on its rigor — factors should be concrete and backed by data rather than vague. A good practice is to pair the fields, for example matching strengths with opportunities to plan specific actions.
Practical application
SWOT is used when planning a company's strategy, introducing a new product, entering a new market and periodically assessing the health of a business. In online marketing, the analysis helps prepare a campaign, choose communication channels and define a buyer persona. It also helps deliberately leverage brand strengths in content marketing and in building brand image.
In practice, SWOT often becomes a launchpad for further analysis and for setting measurable goals that can be tracked with KPIs. Its strength lies in simplicity and versatility — it works both for a small service business and for a large e-commerce project. For the analysis to stay useful, it is worth updating it regularly, because both the internal situation and the market environment constantly change.
