SMO

SMO (Social Media Optimization) is a set of practices that optimise content and a website so it spreads better on social media and drives engagement. The goal is to increase reach, shares and traffic flowing from platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn. SMO is a close cousin of SEO — both disciplines pursue visibility, but in different channels.

How SMO works

SMO spans both a site's technical layer and how content is created and published. Its key elements include:

  • Open Graph tags — control over how a link preview looks (title, description, image) once shared.
  • Shareable content — engaging material that users want to pass along.
  • Social buttons and integrations — making it easy to share content straight from the page.
  • Consistent identity — attention to branding, hashtags and brand recognisability across social channels.

The point, then, is for content to be not only valuable but also technically prepared to look good and spread easily across the social web.

SMO in practice

SMO is applied when building a brand's social media presence, promoting content marketing pieces and running reach-focused organic campaigns. In practice this means configuring Open Graph and Twitter cards on the site, designing attractive share graphics, choosing hashtags and publishing material that invites interaction. While social signals are not a direct ranking factor, the traffic and recognisability SMO builds support a broader visibility strategy, including SEO indirectly.

How does SMO differ from SEO?

SEO optimises a page for search engine results, while SMO optimises it for social media — its goal is sharing, reach and engagement. The two complement each other: social signals support brand visibility, and strong content serves both search engines and social platforms.
