Geotargeting

Geotargeting is the technique of delivering content, ads and offers tailored to a visitor's physical location. Thanks to it, a user in Gdansk may see a different version of a page, message or ad than someone browsing the same site in Madrid, which increases relevance and campaign effectiveness.

How geotargeting works

The system determines a visitor's location from several signals and then serves them appropriately tailored content. The most commonly used data sources are:

  • IP address — mapped to a country, region or city via geolocation databases;
  • GPS and mobile data — precise positioning on smartphones, useful for hyperlocal advertising;
  • Browser and account settings — language, time zone and the user's declared location.

Based on this, a site can redirect the visitor to the correct language version, display prices in the local currency, or show the nearest point of sale. In advertising, geotargeting narrows a campaign's delivery to specific areas — from an entire country down to a radius of a few kilometres around a store.

Practical application

In paid advertising, geotargeting limits the budget to regions where the business actually operates, so Google Ads does not waste spend on irrelevant audiences. In e-commerce it enables automatic selection of currency, language and shipping costs, and in SEO it supports local search optimisation for regionally focused businesses.

The technique is also used at the infrastructure level — for example, to route traffic to the geographically nearest server or CDN node, which shortens page load times. When implementing geotargeting, it is worth respecting privacy and GDPR: location data is information whose processing requires a proper legal basis and transparency toward the user.
