Demand gen
Demand generation (commonly shortened to demand gen) is a marketing strategy focused on creating awareness of a problem — and appetite for a solution — among people who are not yet actively shopping. Rather than harvesting existing demand the way paid search or classic lead capture does, demand gen manufactures new demand: it educates the market, builds brand trust, and positions the company as the obvious choice once a prospect finally enters buying mode.
How demand generation works
The engine of demand gen is genuinely useful content distributed where the target audience already spends time, with no immediate ask in return. Core building blocks include:
- Educational content — in-depth articles, industry reports, podcasts, webinars and video that solve real problems (the backbone of content marketing).
- Ungated distribution — most assets are freely accessible, because the goal is reach and memorability rather than an instant form fill.
- Thought leadership — company experts visible on LinkedIn, at conferences and inside professional communities.
- Intent signals and nurturing — tracking engagement (repeat visits, pricing-page views, webinar attendance) and warming audiences until they raise their hand.
Demand gen in practice
The approach shines in B2B and in categories with long sales cycles — SaaS platforms, IT services, cloud and hosting infrastructure — where a buyer must first understand the problem ("why does my store slow down under load?") before evaluating vendors. A technology provider might publish performance-tuning guides and security checklists for months, only nudging readers toward its offering at the bottom of the sales funnel.
Measurement also differs from performance campaigns. Instead of cost per lead alone, teams track growth in branded search volume, content reach and engagement, direct traffic, and the share of "hand-raiser" inquiries that arrive already convinced. Note that Google Ads offers a campaign type literally named Demand Gen (serving across YouTube, Gmail and Discover) — that is one tactical channel, not the strategy itself. Done well, demand generation lowers acquisition costs over time because prospects arrive pre-sold by the brand's own content.

Najczęstsze pytania
How is demand gen different from lead generation?
Lead generation captures contact details from people who already show interest, usually behind a form. Demand generation works one step earlier — it educates a market that is not searching yet, so its payoff arrives later but produces warmer, higher-intent buyers.
