Broad Match

Broad match is the widest keyword match type in Google Ads, allowing an ad to appear not only for the exact phrase you enter but also for searches related to its meaning — synonyms, plurals, misspellings, and queries that share a similar intent. Its purpose is to maximise campaign reach without forcing advertisers to manually list hundreds of keyword variations.

How broad match works

When you add a keyword as broad match, Google uses machine learning to interpret its meaning and then maps it to real user queries. The system weighs the search context, the user's recent activity, the content of your landing page, and the other keywords in the ad group. For example, the phrase running shoes might trigger the ad on searches such as athletic footwear, jogging trainers, or cheap workout sneakers.

Broad match is data-hungry and performs best alongside automated bidding strategies like Maximise Conversions, which steer impressions toward queries with genuine sales potential rather than spending on loosely related searches. Unlike the retired broad match modifier, word order in the query no longer affects eligibility — the algorithm's reading of meaning is what counts.

Practical applications

Advertisers use broad match to discover new, non-obvious converting queries, to test a wide market, or to scale a well-funded campaign. It is also valuable when researching search intent, because the search-terms report reveals exactly which queries reach your site, and the best performers can later be promoted into tighter match types. Control is essential: reviewing that report regularly, building a list of negative keywords, and watching cost per click (CPC) keep the budget from leaking into irrelevant searches. A common approach is to launch a test campaign on a limited budget, watch which searches the ads land on, and then gradually narrow and exclude. Managed well, broad match is the cheapest source of qualified traffic and a way to surface queries the advertiser would never have thought of; managed poorly, it is the fastest way to burn through a budget on searches that have nothing to do with the offering.

How is broad match different from exact match?

Broad match lets your ad show on related searches, synonyms and intent variations, maximising reach. Exact match restricts impressions to queries with the same meaning as the keyword, giving tighter control but a smaller audience.
