Bootstrap

Bootstrap is an open-source front-end framework: a coordinated set of CSS styles, ready-made UI components and small JavaScript behaviors that dramatically shortens the path from blank page to working, responsive interface. Created at Twitter and released publicly in 2011, it became the world's most widely used CSS framework; the current major version, Bootstrap 5, dropped the jQuery dependency and leans on CSS custom properties.

How Bootstrap works

Three building blocks do most of the work:

• The grid — a flexbox-based, 12-column responsive layout with breakpoints from xs to xxl. Classes like col-md-6 declare how much width an element takes at each screen size, which is the backbone of responsive design in Bootstrap projects.
• Components — prestyled buttons, forms, navbars, cards, modals, dropdowns, accordions, toasts and tables, consistent out of the box and reasonably accessible.
• Utility classes — terse helpers for spacing, color, display and typography (mt-3, d-flex, text-muted) that eliminate much of the custom CSS a project would otherwise accumulate.

Customization is best done at the source: import Bootstrap's Sass, override variables (brand colors, radii, fonts) and compile only the modules you actually use, which also trims the bundle. Since v5.3 the framework ships native dark-mode support via the data-bs-theme attribute and paired color tokens.

Practical use

Bootstrap is the pragmatic choice when speed and consistency matter more than a unique visual identity: admin dashboards, SaaS back offices, internal tools, prototypes and MVPs. A large ecosystem of commercial themes (Metronic, AdminLTE and others) builds entire design systems on top of it, and countless job-ready developers know its conventions — a real staffing advantage.

The criticisms are familiar: default-styled sites look alike, and pulling in the whole library for three components wastes kilobytes. Both are solvable — theme through Sass variables and import selectively. Teams wanting full design freedom often reach for utility-first alternatives instead, trading Bootstrap's ready components for complete control.
