AuthInfo code
The AuthInfo code (also called the EPP code, transfer code or authorization code) is a unique, confidential string assigned to a specific domain that acts as a password authorizing its transfer between registrars. Its purpose is to confirm that whoever requests the move actually has rights to the domain. Without the correct AuthInfo code, transferring a domain to a new provider is impossible.
What the AuthInfo code involves
The code is generated and held by the registry of the given extension (TLD) and the domain's current registrar. A transfer procedure using it looks like this:
- obtaining the code — the owner asks the current registrar to issue the AuthInfo code for their domain;
- initiating the transfer — at the new registrar, they start the move and enter the code they received;
- verification — the registry checks that the code matches; a correct code authenticates the operation;
- confirmation — the transfer usually requires additional approval from the domain administrator.
A precondition for the transfer is also unlocking the domain (removing the transfer lock) at the old registrar.
Practical application
The AuthInfo code is essential for every domain transfer — for example when you move a portfolio of addresses to a new, cheaper or better-quality domain provider, or consolidate all a company's domains under one registrar. It is a separate matter from a domain assignment, which transfers ownership; a transfer with an AuthInfo code merely changes the registrar servicing the domain.
Because the code functions as a password, it should be treated as sensitive data — never shared with third parties and passed only to the trusted new registrar. After a completed transfer the owner's details remain visible in the WHOIS database, and the DNS configuration usually needs to be verified with the new provider.
